Based in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., Penn Millers Insurance Company began serving the agribusiness market in 1887 when a group of Pennsylvania mill owners found it difficult to purchase affordable insurance due to the explosive nature of grain dust. The mill owners found that by a policy of careful selection, strict underwriting, regular inspection and engineering each risk -- losses could be reduced and rates kept low. The concept caught on then and continues today.
Rain and Hail L.L.C., started in 1919, established standards of expertise in product lines, financial stability and dependable performance which has made it one of the nation’s leading crop insurance underwriters. Over the years, agribusiness also became a growing focus of Rain and Hail’s flexible service. Headquartered in Johnston, Iowa, Rain and Hail employees understand American agriculture because they have lived it, enabling the company to have a unique perspective on risk management and the ability to tailor insurance plans to fit the agricultural communities where customers live and work.
Both being part of the Chubb Companies, the combined efforts of Penn Millers and Rain and Hail’s agribusiness department has created great synergy. Penn Millers specializes in coverages for commercial agriculture, with specialty products for feed, grain and fertilizer, while Rain and Hail’s agribusiness department specializes in coverages for farm and ranch property risks.
Today, Penn Millers and Rain and Hail’s agribusiness department have changed their names to Chubb Agribusiness to combine property and casualty offerings and align them under the Chubb brand, creating a focused approach to the rural marketplace that specifically fit the needs of agents and insureds.
